A GP may refer the patient directly to a dental prosthetist where the patient has no natural teeth and requires dental prosthetic services only (eg full dentures), or requires repairs or maintenance to full or partial dentures. A GP cannot refer a patient directly to a dental specialist. This section was originally inserted to ensure that any person practicing as a Dental Prosthetist was adequately qualified. With the development of the profession this Section is now irrelevant and in any event is satisfied by the requirements placed on dental prosthetists in Sections 17 and 18 of the Act.
A dentist can refer the patient onto a dental specialist, another dentist or to a dental prosthetist, where required. The pertinent Registration Act in each state or territory regulates the procedures that a dental prosthetist can perform. In some states and territories implant retained dentures are within the dental prosthetist’s scope of practice.
Some services.
The best type of mouthguard is custom-made by your Dental Prosthetist, (You do not need a referral to visit a Dental Prosthetist). It offers the best protection, fit and comfort level because it is made from a cast of your teeth - to fit your teeth. In some cases their GP will refer them directly to a dental prosthetist for denture work.
Relines add new base material to the tissue side of a denture so it fits properly. Your dental prosthetist will need to take an impression inside your existing denture. Denturists work with constructed or prosthetic (artificial replacement) devices only. Dental technicians also work in laboratories and are trained to make appliances for dentists.
